Why Did a Giant Hairball Work as a PR Stunt?

K18 Tumblehair giant hairball PR stunt rolling through New York City

K18 Hair rolled a 150-pound ball of hair through the streets of New York City, and the internet lost its mind. It’s one of the smartest PR stunts of the year.

The Tumblehair launched K18’s new FutureIQ Hair Longevity Serum. It was made from real and synthetic hair sourced around the city, including from K18’s partner salons. Its size was built on a number. K18 says the serum helps one person keep about 19,000 hairs. Multiply that by New York’s roughly 8.5 million residents and you get just over 161 billion strands.

The numbers behind the PR stunt

According to CreatorIQ data reported by Marketing Brew, the stunt generated an estimated $150,000 in earned media value. It also drove more than 1.1 million social impressions and nearly 30,000 engagements.

Our founder, Melissa DiGianfilippo, sees a bigger lesson in those numbers. A well-executed physical activation can outperform a paid campaign in ways that are genuinely hard to replicate. You can buy impressions. You can’t easily buy people stopping on a sidewalk to film something they can’t explain.

Curiosity first, logo later

K18 didn’t claim the hairball on social right away. Instead, the brand let the curiosity and the mild disgust do the work first. The CMO has said the team expected people to be either disgusted or obsessed, and wanted both. Any strong reaction still gets people talking.

Real is the new hook

Audiences now assume anything weird online is AI-generated. NewBeauty reported that plenty of viewers thought exactly that about the Tumblehair. The fact that it was completely real became part of the story.

Every stunt needs a finish line

The hairball’s route ended outside Sephora in the Meatpacking District at the K18 Hair Longevity Lab, a pop-up with scalp analyses and product demos. Attention turned into a retail moment. That’s the difference between a viral clip and a campaign.

What brands can borrow

Start with one number that matters to your customer. Then make it physical. Keep the branding quiet long enough for people to wonder. Finally, give them somewhere to go once they figure it out.
